chinese new year movie 2020 must-watch

Chinese New Year 2020 is looming ever closer, and we know what that means! Of all the Chinese New Year Traditions, watching Chinese New Year Movie is one of the most exciting!

So here’s 8 Chinese New Year Movie Classics you should Definitely Rewatch for this upcoming CNY 2020:

Let’s Rewatch These 8 Chinese New Year Movie Classics for CNY 2020

1. Great Day (天天好, 2011)

Directed by: Chiu Keng Guan

Great Day (2011) has everything you would look for in a Chinese New Year Movie. It’s both heartwarming and funny, showing all kinds of relationships from family to friends. There’s special emphasis on father and son, as well as children and grandparents!

If anything, it shows the strong togetherness of Malaysians (one blogger calls it the “Kampung Spirit”). All in all, definitely a must-watch for Malaysians this Lunar New Year 2020!

2. Think Big Big (2018)

Director: Chiu Keng Guan

From the same director of Great Day is Think Big Big (2018), a Malaysian Chinese New Year Movie with Mandarin language.

The story is emotional and heartfelt, with takes on sensitive issues like body image and our obsession with social media (and how we think it represents us!)

This will no doubt make you treasure your relationships with family and friends (especially girl friends!), like all the good Chinese New Year Movies do.

3. Love from Kampung (2017)

Director: Silver Chung

Love from Kampung’s (2017) plot alone is enough to make you cry. Basically, a group of old friends become so successful they don’t come back home to their village every Chinese New Year. So their parents pack their bags and visit their children in the city instead.

It’s bittersweet at first, but Love from Kampung ends beautifully with all families reunited and happy together again.

4. A Journey of Happiness (2019)

Director: JY Teng

A Journey of Happiness (2019) is a recent Chinese New Year Movie whose story comes close to the heart. It’s about a problematic family from Hong Kong who comes to Malaysia for a vacation. There, they try to make things right.

If you’re a sucker for once-distant family members coming together again, then you should watch A Journey of Happiness this Chinese New Year 2020.

5. My Papa Rich (2015)

Director: Ryon Lee

My Papa Rich (2015) is a type of Chinese New Year Movie that’s more for laughs and comedy (and less on the dramatic). If you love Stephen Chow movies like Kung Fu Hustle and Shaolin Soccer, then you’ll love this Chinese New Year Movie Classic.

6. A House of Happiness (2018)

Director: JY Teng

From the director of A Journey of Happiness comes award-winning film A House of Happiness (JY Teng’s first debut film). Though the film takes on the story of an elderly man with Alzheimers, the movie is careful not to make it too offensive despite its comedic tone.

Still, a movie that features Alzheimers will end in a sad tone. But like all Chinese New Year Movies, the resolution comes with family relationships being mended, bringing back love and warmth.

7. Amazing Spring (2019)

Director: Nick Wong

Amazing Spring is different from other Chinese New Year Movies because there’s Time Travelling involved (not to count the fact that it’s also a Musical-Comedy Film).

It’s about an arrogant young man who tries to buy the Da Di Village but then accidentally travels back in time to the version of that same village in the past. Worth watching for the comedy!

8. King of Mahjong (2015)

Director: Cheng Kin-Kwok

Last but not the least is King of Mahjong (2015), a Singaporean-Malaysian comedy film about the ancient gambling game Mahjong, focusing on a Mahjong Maestro and his two disciples.

It’s amazing and comedic, with the story going to crazy lengths just to win the legendary game!

If you watch this Chinese New Year Movie and suddenly get the urge to play some Mahjong, you can actually try it for free!
