Which boat comes first in Vietnam’s ‘cultural race’?
The majority of boat races occur annually or as a component of cultural festivals. Each of them carries a story, a background, or a conviction that expresses appreciation for our forebears, a desire to master nature, and the quest of prosperity and happiness.
Đà Nẵng traditional boat racing festival – Praying for good weather and fishing
Every year, as the first month of the lunar calendar approaches, Central á Nng City’s Hàn River dons a customary, vibrant “coat” of dragon boats in preparation for the year’s most exciting boat racing festival.
Boat racing in Cẩm L village, Cẩm L District, occurs at the onset of spring as part of New Year celebrations. The winning team brings pride, good luck, and prosperity to their village for the entire year. Young men aged 18 to 35 are encouraged to participate and represent their villages. The festival draws around 20 teams from Đà Nẵng and neighboring provinces such as Huế, Quảng Nam, and Quảng Ngãi.
Everyone is excited to take part and always anticipate its arrival. When the racing day comes, elders get up early for traditional preparations and people fill two sides of the river’s banks, finding the spot with the best view.
As soon as boats start to run forward, the river banks are full of cheering, with flags and drums, to support their team. The noise rises every time one boat pulls ahead. Upon the first boat’s victory, the champion’s village celebrates with dancing and singing, motivating other teams to strive for success next year. Irrespective of the results, the spring festival unites everyone, demonstrating the community’s strong spirit of solidarity.
Lệ Thủy boat racing – A rain celebration
Vietnamese people in L Thy District, Central Quang Bnh province celebrate the country’s greatest boat racing festival on September 2 to make the National Day of Vietnam (September 2) even more memorable.
It occurs above the Kin Giang River, which, according to folklore, once dried up during a summer drought. However, when August arrived with lots of rain, the river was once again full of water, offering a plentiful source for agricultural output. So a celebration of boat racing was planned to rejoice and pray for a successful harvest.
Standing spiritual boat racing of Hành Thiện Festival
Hành Thin village hosts a renowned spiritual festival featuring an exhilarating boat race on the Red River. The festival, held at Keo Pagoda from September 12 to 15 according to the lunar calendar, pays homage to Không L Zen, a revered monk known for his contributions to poetry, medicine, and bronze casting. The highlight of the festival is the thrilling boat race, where villagers of all ages, men and women alike, participate. Each boat carries ten individuals who must stand throughout the four-hour race instead of sitting as usual. Substitutions are not permitted.
With only two racers per team in 12 teams, the boat race becomes the smallest scale event of its kind. However, it still attracts thousands of visitors.
“Villagers are very excited when the race is organized. Siu Nghiệp, Chairman of Ia O Commune People’s Committee, expressed excitement for the racing festival, highlighting teams’ enthusiasm and anticipation. The festival preserves the cultural value of Jrai ethnic people’s boat and contributes to the nation’s cultural identity.
